It’s easy to go to the pub with kids in the summer: find a big garden, with or without a play area, and sit in it! It’s a bit harder in the winter when you want to sit inside for a drink or meal. You still need lots of space, perhaps games, reasonably priced food and also tolerant staff! Here is a list of pubs we think are great…let us know if you have any other suggestions.
1) The Royal Oak in Gretton
Lovely big pub in an old Cotswold building with views over the beautiful landscape. It has seasonal food and great choices for adults and children. It has a range of different sized tables, an open fire and a lovely conservatory area. Very welcoming and friendly staff.
2) The Plough in Prestbury
It has a cosy bit by the fire and games to play, but it also has a big family room that you can book at no extra cost. It has great food and very friendly staff. There is also the contained play area which you can go out to and explore the garden.
3) The Red Lion in Wainlode
Cosy inside with great, reasonably priced food and it’s near a river so you can go and see the views or go on one of the many walks nearby.
4) The Bell at Sapperton
A great place for families – enjoy a walk in the local area and then pop in for lunch or dinner. Roaring log fires and cosy corners in the winter and a beautifully landscaped garden and courtyard if you fancy some fresh air. Child options and all roasts available at child portions.
5) The Fleece Inn, Nr Evesham
National Trust owned pub in the Vale of Evesham. Run with a love of tradition, it serves delicious pub grub with traditional English favourites featuring largely on the menu such as locally made Sausage and Mash. They have a children’s menu and can provide main meals as a child’s portion.
6) The Old Elm, Churchdown
Big independently run pub, lots of variety with food and a great outdoor contained play area if the weather is nice. Lots of places to sit and eat inside with a separate children’s menu.
7) The Plough, Ford
Log fires, great fresh, locally sourced food and a separate children’s menu. Friendly staff with lots of places to sit. It’s also a good stop off after a nice walk in the Cotswolds countryside.
8) The Star, Ashton Under Hill
locally sourced food including meat from its own farm in Grafton just a mile from the pub and vegetables from the Vale. Children’s menu and Sunday roasts for kids. Outdoor play area if it’s nice with climbing swings and two slides. Very welcoming.
9) The Bell, Shurdington
Big pub with lots of informal seating and some more formal. Big garden with play area in the adjoining field. Children’s menu and plenty of food choices.
10) The Gloucester Old Spot
Meals served with fresh local ingredients. The pub promises ‘an escape from the hustle and bustle of the outside world.’ You can relax in the snug bar, have a more formal meal in the dining room or enjoy the peaceful garden if the weather is nice.
